The holiday season is typically a busy time for retailers and those in the entertainment and hospitality industries.
Before the season gets underway, it might be a good time to consider a new Clover cash register for your place of business.
If you have a minimum of counter space available at your point of sale, you might want to consider either a Clover Flex or a Clover Mini.
Each offers size advantages if counter space is at a premium. Each also offers you the opportunity to participate in a credit card processing cash discount program.
However, they are different systems with their own capabilities and advantages. Here is a closer look at each.
Clover Mini
The Clover Mini is a countertop unit, one with a very small footprint so it will not take up a lot of real estates if your space is limited. Despite its small size, it has the capability to integrate all your business needs:
- Accounting
- Gift cards
- Inventory
- Marketing
If you just need a basic terminal, the Clover Mini can handle both contactless and EMV chip payments, as well as the traditional swipe. However, you can upgrade later to incorporate other capabilities and add more components.

Clover Flex
The Clover Flex terminal is not only small but also portable, meaning that it does not confine you to one location while carrying out tasks such as managing inventory, processing transactions, printing receipts, or taking orders from customers.
This flexibility comes in part from Wi-Fi and wireless 3G connectivity, QR code scanner, and built-in camera.
The rechargeable battery lasts a long time, so you can take orders or check out customers wherever they are, and you can also capture their signatures with ease with the five-inch touch screen display.
The Clover Flex allows you to handle the entire transaction from the palm of your hand.

Comparison
The question isn’t necessarily whether the Clover Flex or the Clover Mini is better but which will work better for your business. That depends partially on what sort of business you run.
If you operate a restaurant, the Clover Flex may offer you more advantages because of the ability to complete the entire transaction at the customers’ table.
Any sort of business in which you go to the customers’ car to accept payment may also benefit from the mobility and portability provided by the Clover Flex.
The Clover Mini might make more sense in a retail setting. However, you shouldn’t necessarily count the Clover Flex out.
If and when your shop gets busy with holiday shoppers, you can use both the Clover Flex and the Clover Mini to check people out at a minimum of two locations as quickly as possible.
This saves your customers from having to wait in line and your cashier from becoming overwhelmed.
Therefore, rather than thinking of the Clover Mini and the Clover Flex in either/or terms, perhaps it would be better to think of them as complementary, working together to expand your capabilities and satisfy your customers.
